The city of Nago, Okinawa Precture, said Monday that the Defense Ministry branch in Okinawa has denied knowledge of a reported U.S. blueprint for building housing and other facilities at the planned base to replace U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

The Okinawa Defense Bureau issued the denial in response to an inquiry by Nago about the reported blueprint for relocating the Futenma base, which is in the city of Ginowan, to the Henoko district of Nago, the city said.

The unpublished U.S. blueprint, compiled in 2008, shows that the inland facilities would be built in addition to an airstrip that extends offshore as specified in a published Japan-U.S. accord for the replacement facility.

The inland area has been designated as a site from which soil will be taken to fill in the offshore areas to accommodate the planned runways.

The bureau said it plans to plant trees in the inland area after the reclamation.
