An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 struck eastern Hokkaido on Thursday afternoon, but no tsunami alert was issued, the Meteorological Agency said.
The 2:47 p.m. quake, which originated off the Nemuro Peninsula at a depth of around 50 km, registered with an intensity of 4 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Nemuro, it said.
