Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. and two other firms said Monday they will jointly support Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp. with a study on the technical development of methane hydrate production.

JAPEX, Japan Drilling Co. and Inpex Corp. accepted JOGMEC's public invitation to help with a study on the medium — and long-term offshore production of the next-generation energy source.

Under a contract concluded with JOGMEC in late May, the three companies will jointly formulate a basic policy, conduct necessary technical studies and collect technical information.

The three companies said they have set up a management team and will jointly manage progress in the commissioned work, with JAPEX acting as team leader.
