Low-cost carrier Jetstar Japan Co. said Wednesday it will postpone a planned expansion of its domestic services until June 12, nine days later than planned, due to delays in aircraft maintenance.

A total of 101 flights on five routes connecting Narita with Fukuoka; Naha and Osaka; and Osaka with Naha and Fukuoka have been canceled, affecting around 2,800 reservations, the company said. It will offer customers other flights or refunds.

Rival budget carrier Peach Aviation Ltd. said Tuesday it had canceled 894 flights in July and August because of pilot shortages. Vanilla Air Inc. has canceled 154 domestic flights in June for the same reason.

Peach Aviation's announcement amounts to canceling about 20 percent of its total flights, including 86 international services connecting Osaka with Hong Kong and Okinawa with Taipei. The cancellations will affect about 7,800 passengers.
