Two people were killed on Monday while climbing Mount Karasawadake in the Northern Alps, on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures, police said.

A group of climbers placed an emergency call shortly after 7 a.m., saying two people had fallen from a trail at an altitude of 2,200 meters on the 3,110-meter peak, just south of the border with Toyama.

One was a 19-year-old member of a mountaineering club at the National Defense Academy. The other was a 28-year-old instructor who was trying to help him.

Both were confirmed dead at the bottom of a cliff, 300 to 400 meters below, police said.
