Kobe Steel Ltd. said Friday it will place a bid for Kansai Electric Power Co.'s thermal power plant project and construct a new plant in Kobe to boost its electricity supply business.

The new facility, designed to generate up to 1.4 million kilowatts of energy — equivalent to the output of a large nuclear reactor — is expected to start operating between fiscal 2021 and 2022, the company said. Successful bidders will be decided next February.
