Yamagata bullet train to get foot baths, tatami

JIJI

East Japan Railway Co. says it will introduce a train on the Yamagata Shinkansen Line with a sightseeing car equipped with foot baths and tatami areas.

JR East President Tetsuro Tomita said Tuesday it will be the first “omotenashi,” or hospitality, bullet train.

The railway will operate the train mainly on weekends between Shinjo, Yamagata Prefecture, and the city of Fukushima starting in July.

The six-car train will have two foot baths measuring 2.4 meters by 0.5 meters each in the first car. Other cars, all with Japanese-style decor, will have tatami-covered floors and seats.

The line’s trains will also receive a renewed purple look on the exterior, which will debut in April.
