Five restaurants with Japanese chefs earned a star in the 2014 French edition of the Michelin guide, raising the total number of starred restaurants in France led by Japanese cooks to 20.

Three are based in Paris — Jin, Okuda and Es. Japanese-style restaurant Jin opened in January 2013.

"I'm glad my desire to serve authentic Japanese cuisine has been accepted in France," owner Nina Nikkhou said.

Okuda, another Japanese-style restaurant that opened in Paris last year, is run by chef Toru Okuda, who has won Michelin stars for his Tokyo restaurants as well.

Es serves contemporary French cuisine under chef Takayuki Honjo.

In Lyon, chef Takao Takano's restaurant, which bears his name, serves creative French cuisine.

Chef Masafumi Hamano of Au 14 Fevrier, which specializes in creative French cuisine in Saint-Amour-Bellevue in Bourgogne, also earned a star.
