Toshiba to repair defective washers

Toshiba Home Appliances Corp. said it will provide free repairs for washing machines with drying functions to address the risk of smoke and fire.

Subject to the measure are about 583,600 units of 30 models sold in Japan and made between July 2005 and November 2011, including a model sold under the Muji brand by Ryohin Keikaku Co.

Vinyl covers of wiring near motors could deteriorate and cause sparks. Due to the sparks, cushions inside the washing machine can catch fire, according to the Toshiba Corp. subsidiary.

Toshiba Home Appliances is aware of three such accidents, with two people suffering minor injuries in one case, company officials said.
