El Salvador, Costa Rica to hold runoffs

A former leftist guerrilla narrowly missed outright victory in El Salvador’s presidential race on Sunday. Ruling leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front candidate Salvador Sanchez Ceren will now face former San Salvador Mayor Norman Quijano of the conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance in the second round, to be held on March 9.

Costa Rica also appeared bound Sunday for a second round of presidential voting. Jonny Araya of the ruling right-wing National Liberation Party will face centrist rival Luis Guillermo Solis.
