High school students in Northern California who sent a derelict fishing boat back to a tsunami-hit school in Iwate Prefecture will come over for a visit next month.

The six students from Del Norte High School in Crescent City, California, along with some of their teachers, will visit Takata High School in Rikuzentakata from Feb. 17 to 19 after coordinating the return of the "miracle boat" last October.

The 6-meter craft was used for training in scallop farming at the high school before it was washed away in the 2011 tsunami.

During their visit, the Californians will interact with local students and meet with Rikuzentakata Mayor Futoshi Toba. They are scheduled to call on U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy.
