A Japanese citizen was abducted by gunmen over the weekend in a Manila suburb, apparently for ransom, local police said Monday.

Hayato Sumi, who is in his 40s, was accosted Saturday night at his used-bicycle shop in Don Bosco, a village in Paranaque City, by men who gagged and blindfolded him before dragging him into a car and driving off, they said.

Sumi, from Kanagawa Prefecture, is married to a local Filipino, and a relative was said to have received a phone call demanding a ransom of some 5 million pesos ($113,000).
