Lawmaker Antonio Inoki will be barred for 30 days from the House of Councilors as punishment for traveling to North Korea earlier this month without the chamber's permission, the ruling and opposition camps agreed Wednesday.

The Liberal Democratic Party and opposition forces, including the Democratic Party of Japan, are united in meting out the second-harshest punishment allowed by Upper House rules, they said.

Stripping a lawmaker of Diet membership is the only punishment more severe than a 30-day suspension.

Inoki declined a request by the Discipline Committee to explain himself. Nippon Ishin has suspended his membership for 50 days for making the unauthorized trip.
