JTB aiming to boost revenue from sports by 10-fold

JIJI

Leading travel agency JTB Corp. aims to post ¥300 billion in revenue from sports-related operations in fiscal 2020, about 10 times the current level, President Hiromi Tagawa said in a recent interview.

The company will try to achieve that target by aggressively vying to bring international sporting events to Japan, he said.

Tokyo’s successful bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will enable Japan to demonstrate to the world that it “can safely and comfortably host international sporting competitions,” Tagawa said.

JTB is launching a new division next month that will be in charge of sports-related business. It will be tasked with attracting international competitions for sports such as basketball, volleyball and golf.

The company also intends to boost package tours that feature watching sporting events abroad.

JTB is ready to undertake both bringing such events to the country and handling the logistics, Tagawa said.
