Mikitani to stay aboard key panel

Less than two weeks after announcing his intention to leave a key government economic panel in protest over restrictions on online sales of some drugs, Rakuten Inc. Chairman and President Hiroshi Mikitani said Monday that he has withdrawn his resignation.

The head of the online shopping mall operator said he withdrew the resignation from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Industrial Competitiveness Council when he met with Abe Monday.

At a press conference on Nov. 6, Mikitani said he was leaving the council in protest over a government decision to impose restrictions on online sales of some over-the-counter drugs.

Mikitani advocates the complete removal of restrictions on online sales of products, including drugs and educational and medical services.
