Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit typhoon-hit Izu Oshima Island, south of Tokyo, on Sunday, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato told a press conference Friday.

While inspecting the local situation and rescue operations for the missing residents, Abe will also meet with Oshima Mayor Masafumi Kawashima to exchange views over disaster management.

More than 20 people are confirmed to have died, while many others remain missing after the island was severely hit by powerful Typhoon Wipha on Wednesday.

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera will also visit the island Saturday to encourage Self-Defense Forces personnel involved in the search operations, he told reporters.
