Typhoon Danas might threaten Kyushu as early as Tuesday, the Meteorological Agency said Sunday.

Danas, the 24th typhoon of the year, is expected to approach Okinawa and Amami-Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture on Monday before moving northward toward the main island, the agency said, warning of high winds and tidal waves.

At 6 p.m. Sunday, Danas was about 490 km southeast of Minami-Daito Island in Okinawa and moving west-northwest at 30 kph. The storm had an atmospheric pressure of 965 hectopascals at its center and was packing winds of up to 198 kph.

Typhoon Fitow, the 23rd of the year, veered northwest over the East China Sea toward mainland China after threatening Okinawa on Saturday.
