Madagascar mob lynches Europeans

A mob in Madagascar lynched two Europeans and a local man Thursday after suspecting them of murdering a young boy for his organs, authorities and witnesses said.

Residents on the tourist island of Nosy Be went on a daylong rampage after a missing 8-year-old was reportedly found dead. Local officials initially said both Europeans were French, but later they confirmed that one was in fact Italian.

The two men “confessed under torture to having trafficked organs,” said gendarmerie Cmdr. Guy Bobin Randriamaro.

Residents said the island had been tense for days before the mob attacks amid rumors of children disappearing.

A local Italian restaurant owner said: “There’s no doubt that some children have disappeared. People have been talking about it for several days, and notices were posted, with photos everywhere.”
