The Japan Coast Guard has arrested a Chinese crew member over the fatal collision Friday between two cargo ships south of Tokyo.

Xia Hongbo, 35, was on duty when the 2,962-ton Jia Hui collided with the 498-ton Eifuku Maru No. 18 and was at fault for the collision, according to the coast guard.

Before his arrest Sunday, Xia was quoted as telling investigators he tried to prevent the collision, which occurred at around 1:25 a.m. Friday.

Five of the six crew members on the Eifuku Maru, which capsized, were confirmed dead. First engineer Tamao Miki, 61, remains missing.
