Sony Corp. ranked second in mobile phone shipments in the April-June quarter with 1.35 million units, rising from fourth place in the previous quarter, market research company International Data Corp. Japan said Monday.
Sony enjoyed domestic shipment growth thanks to NTT DoCoMo Inc.’s so-called two forward sales campaign featuring price cuts on two models from Sony and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. Apple Inc. of the United States ranked first with shipments of 2.36 million units, taking a 27.9 percent share of the market and leading for the third quarter straight, IDC Japan said.
Sharp Corp. came in third with 1.27 million units, and Samsung took fourth place with 900,000 units.
Overall April-June shipments of mobile phones totaled 8.44 million units, up 7.1 percent from a year before. The shipments rose for the first time in two quarters, with smartphones accounting for 77.4 percent.
