YOKOHAMA – The wife of a Yokohama National University professor was arrested Sunday for allegedly beating her spouse to death with a ceramic mug at their home in Isehara, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Emiko Hirose, 61, allegedly struck her husband, Yasuo, 70, in the head and face about a dozen times around 8:40 p.m. Sunday when he returned home.
She called an ambulance at 8:50 p.m. saying; “I had a quarrel with my husband and now he’s lying unconscious,” police said.
She was arrested on the spot for attempted murder, but the charge was changed to murder after her husband was pronounced dead soon after being taken to a hospital.
According to the police, the wife admitted beating her husband after being angered by his allegedly constant drinking and extramarital affairs but denied she intended to kill him.
“We argued because my husband had been cheating on me and got drunk every day,” police quoted her as saying.
According to Yokohama National University, Yasuo Hirose became a professor in the engineering department in April 1991, specializing in electronics. He was named a professor emeritus in April 2009.
