ASEAN investment sets record high

The Japan External Trade Organization said direct investment by Japanese companies in ASEAN member nations hit a record high in the January-June period.

Total investment in members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations jumped 55.4 percent from a year before to $10.29 billion (¥995 billion), the highest ever on a six-month basis.

Direct investment in China, however, plunged 31.1 percent to $4.93 billion (¥477 billion), indicating Japanese firms have shifted focus to Southeast Asia since the Senkakus dispute erupted last year.
