East Japan Railway Co. announced Tuesday that a lucky couple will get the chance to hold a special wedding ceremony on board its Yamanote Line later this year.
The event is part of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the Tokyo loop line's signature green color. The wedding ceremony will take place Oct. 14, designated as train day to commemorate the start of the nation's first railway service in 1872 between Shimbashi and Yokohama stations.
"As we thought about possible ways to celebrate the (Yamanote Line) milestone, we figured we should do something that will make people re-appreciate the importance of human bonds," a JR East official said.
Prior to the wedding, the carrier will interview applicants to decide which couple has the most fascinating story demonstrating their "personal connection" with the Yamanote Line.
The pair will have a specially chartered train reserved for them that can accommodate 80 to 120 guests. The train will make one loop of the line in about an hour, from Ikebukuro Station and back again, without stopping.
