A scheduled June 21-28 trip to Turkey by Princess Akiko, the elder daughter of the late Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, has been canceled due to ongoing antigovernment demonstrations in the country, the government said Tuesday.

The 31-year-old princess had planned to give a lecture on Japanese culture at the former Japanese Consulate General in Istanbul, close to the center of the rallies. The Foreign Ministry suggested the trip be rescheduled. She was also to attend a concert honoring her father, a cousin of Emperor Akihito, in Ankara.
