Powerful Taiwan quake kills one

A strong magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Taiwan on Sunday, killing one person and violently shaking buildings in Taipei, emergency officials said.

The powerful quake sent people running into the streets and was also felt in Hong Kong, more than 700 km away.

The temblor struck at 1:43 p.m. and was centered 32 km east of central Nantou County at a depth of 10 km, Taiwan’s Seismology Center said.

The National Fire Agency said a male mountain climber was killed after being hit by falling rocks on Mount Ali, central Taiwan.
