One of the world's largest government-owned storage stations for liquefied petroleum gas has been completed in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, the government said Wednesday.

The capacity of the station is 450,000 tons, enough to cover domestic demand for around 13 days. The facility faces the Seto Inland Sea, and LPG will be delivered nationwide by tankers and trucks in case of an emergency like a major earthquake or tsunami.

The station has three lines of tunnels 180 meters underground to withstand a massive temblor.

Work to fill the plant to its 450,000 ton capacity will be completed around 2017.
