An introductory DVD for the Ground Self-Defense Force has topped the Oricon weekly chart of top DVD hits.
It is the first time a cultural or educational title has topped the overall DVD chart since Oricon Inc. started releasing the weekly sales list in 1999, the company said.
The DVD, released May 13, features a history of tanks. It was produced in collaboration with “Girls and Panzer,” a popular animated series in which female high school students engage in tank warfare under the guise of “senshado,” a martial art featuring the operation of tanks.
The DVD includes a full commentary on tanks recorded by one of the main actresses in the TV series.
The disc sold 15,000 copies in its first week, Oricon said.
Also on this weeks top chart was an introductory DVD featuring equipment of the Air Self-Defense Force, ranked fifth, while a disc on the Maritime Self-Defense Force finished seventh, the market research firm said.
