Cultural asset ranking system eyed

The government is considering creating a special cultural asset designation system to help get such assets on the World Heritage list, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said.

The government will pick important cultural and other assets and add them to the envisioned “Japan Heritage” list with the aim of giving them more international publicity so they eventually make the UNESCO World Heritage list, Suga told reporters Tuesday.

Items to be put on the list are likely to be the 13 now on UNESCO’s tentative list of possible World Heritage assets.
