New Kansai International Airport Co. said Wednesday it has tied up with Australia's Queensland Airports Ltd., the operator of Gold Coast Airport, to encourage low-cost carriers to open more routes bound for Kansai International Airport.

The tieup is also designed to encourage travel agencies to draw up package tours that use both airports, according to New Kansai International Airport.

Low-cost carriers account for 90 percent of all international and domestic flights serving Gold Coast Airport. New Kansai International Airport said it will benefit from Queensland Airports' experience with low-cost carriers.

At present, Jetstar Airways, a subsidiary of Qantas, operates three to five flights a week linking Kansai International and Gold Coast.
