Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Russia on April 29, the Interfax news agency reported Monday.

A diplomat was quoted as saying that "preparations are being made for (the prime minister's) planned visit on the 29th."

It will be the first official visit by a Japanese prime minister to Russia in a decade. Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to exchange views on the two nations' long-standing territorial dispute over a group of Russian-held islands off Hokkaido.

The two leaders are also expected to work on enhancing bilateral cooperation on energy.
