Disaster zone patrol ranks fall

Far fewer people are volunteering for patrols and other anticrime activities in three Tohoku prefectures hit hard by the 3/11 disasters, police said Thursday.

In Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, there were 76,499 anticrime volunteers at the end of last year, down 16,637, or 17.9 percent, from two years before, according to a survey by the National Police Agency. By contrast, the nationwide number rose by 71,742, or 2.7 percent, to 2,773,597.
