Former Sony chief Stringer plans to retire in June

Kyodo

Howard Stringer, chairman of Sony Corp.’s board, has announced he will retire after a shareholders’ meeting in June.

“A new world is opening up for me,” Stringer said Friday in a speech in New York, adding he plans to spend his retirement on education- and art-related projects.

In June 2005, Stringer became the first foreigner to head the electronics giant after assuming the posts of chairman and chief executive officer. He doubled as president and CEO from April 2009, before handing over both positions to Kazuo Hirai last year.
