A 22-year-old woman was stabbed to death early Thursday on a street in Tokyo’s Kichijoji district, the Metropolitan Police Department said.
A 17-year-old male Romanian national believed to have some connection with the attack was apprehended about 500 meters from the scene, the police said.
He is believed to be one of two males who were seen following the woman before the killing. The other suspect was also believed to be a foreigner.
The woman, identified as local resident and restaurant employee Arisa Yamada, was found face down on the street shortly before 2 a.m. She was taken to a hospital where she was confirmed dead.
The police arrested the Romanian for allegedly being in possession of a bank book belonging to a third party and was being questioned about the stabbing.
According to the police, Yamada was stabbed twice in the back and had a cut on her left wrist.
She is thought to have been attacked shortly after stopping at a nearby convenience store on her way home. The police found her purse and other belongings about 200 meters from where she was found lying.
