Toshiba Corp. said Thursday it will test and demonstrate an electric vehicle charging system that uses solar power generation in Indiana.

The project will run from Friday through July 31, 2014.

Toshiba will cooperate with Itochu Corp. and the U.S. organizations Simon Property Group, Duke Energy, Tom Wood Automotive Group and Energy System Network in the plug-in ecosystem project at Simon Property's Clay Terrace Mall in Carmel.

Electricity generated by a 10-kw roof-mounted solar panel will be stored in a Toshiba lithium-ion battery to charge electric vehicles. Toshiba's micro-energy management system will be used to control the battery.

Shoppers will be able to use the system to charge their plug-in electric vehicles while shopping at the mall.
