Family and friends of filmmaker Nagisa Oshima bid farewell to the director Tuesday at his funeral in Tokyo, following his death last week at the age of 80.

Oshima's coffin, laid out at Tsukiji Honganji, was filled with origami cranes and other items with a message from his wife, actress Akiko Koyama, saying, "I was happy to be with you."

Oshima, internationally acclaimed for his films, including "In the Realm of the Senses," "Empire of Passion" and "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," suffered a stroke in 1996 and was being cared for by his wife until he died of pneumonia at a hospital in Kanagawa Prefecture on Jan. 15.
