NTT DoCoMo Inc. will start offering the on-demand video and music services used by its smartphone customers to TV viewers as early as this spring, it was learned Monday.
The service will be offered for about ¥500 a month via fiber-optic or other broadband connections or wireless local area networks and require that special device to be connected to the TVs, the sources said.
Customers will be allowed to access about 7,600 video and music titles currently distributed via on-demand services. Current subscribers will be allowed to use the new TV-based service for free, with the added perk of using their smartphones as remote controls.
Softbank Mobile Corp., a Softbank Corp. unit, is slated to start a similar service in the near future, while KDDI Corp., operator of au mobile phone services, is preparing to launch a similar service.
