A senior Taiwanese official and members of her family died after their rental car collided with a truck while vacationing in Hokkaido, police said.
The accident Friday killed Chung Lung, 65, a high-ranking official in Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, her 23-year-old son and 37-year-old daughter-in-law.
Chung’s 35-year-old son, whose wife was killed, was at the wheel and survived but was in critical condition, a police spokesman said Monday.
The Hokkaido Shimbun said the accident, on a sharp curve in slippery conditions, appeared to have occurred when the rental car veered into the path of an oncoming truck. The driver of the truck escaped with a slight injury.
