Major snack maker Calbee Inc. announced Tuesday a massive recall of its mainline potato chip products, saying tiny bits of broken glass may have made their way into as many as 5.34 million bags since late July.
According to the company, the unprecedented recall of nine products in the Kataage Potato series — all potato chips with different flavors and coming in differed size bags — was prompted by a consumer complaint Saturday after a high school student in the Kansai region sustained minor cuts to the mouth after eating some potato chips.
The products subject to the recall were all packaged at a Calbee factory in Konan, Shiga Prefecture, between July 20 and Saturday. After receiving the complaint, Calbee inspected the production line and discovered that a glass cover for lighting equipment had been broken, it said.
The nine products in the Kataage Potato series include two Kansai-only products, while the rest are sold nationwide.
They are Kansai Dashijoyu in the 65-gram and 80-gram sizes; Usushio Aji, 60 grams and 80 grams; Nori Aji, 65 grams and 80 grams; Black Pepper, 65 grams and 70 grams; and Yuzu Kosho Aji, 63 grams.
