A cold front sent temperatures plummeting to the lowest level this autumn in many parts of the nation Monday, with the season's first subzero temperatures recorded in Sapporo and Nagano, the Meteorological Agency said.

The mercury measured minus 1 in Sapporo and minus 1.3 in the city of Nagano at 10 a.m., while this fall's first frost was observed in the cities of Gifu and Toyama in central Japan, the agency reported.

Among cities in the northeast, Yamagata saw its lowest temperature so far this autumn — 1.3 — and Sendai recorded 2.8, Fukushima 0.1 and Utsunomiya 1.4.

In major cities farther west, temperatures fell to as low as 4 in Nagoya, 6.7 in Osaka and 6.4 in Fukuoka.

The agency meanwhile forecast rough weather starting Monday night in Sea of Japan coastal areas of northern Honshu.
