NEW DELHI – Japanese government agencies held a tourism promotion event Tuesday in New Delhi, making a pitch to the growing middle class in the country.
Norifumi Ide, commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency, said, “We would like to raise awareness (about Japan) in the Indian market and would also consider collaboration with popular Indian movies.”
Indian tourists to Japan have stayed at around 65,000 per year in the past few years, except last year, which saw a roughly 10 percent drop because of Great East Japan Earthquake-related problems.
But the drop was limited compared with tourists from other countries.
Japan has a target of boosting the annual total of Indian travelers to 300,000.
At the event, hosted by the agency and the Japan National Tourism Organization, participants saw performances of traditional dances from two cities in the disaster-hit Tohoku region.
