New optical fiber sends record 5,000 movies in second

Researchers have succeeded in using an optical fiber to transmit 5,000 high-definition movies in one second, setting a world record for high-capacity transmission via the medium.

The team, consisting of researchers from Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., Hokkaido University and others, said Thursday that the feat was made possible by a new fiber they developed that has 12 pathways for optical signals, as opposed to commercial optical fibers, which have only one line.

The research team succeeded in transmitting 1,000 terabits of data per second — a capacity 1,000 times greater than current optical fibers — to a location about 50 km away by making use of a combined data transmission technique that utilizes a property of light waves, it said.
