Rakuten, eAccess join on data service

Online shopping mall operator Rakuten Inc. said it has set up a joint venture with broadband provider eAccess Ltd. to start a mobile data communications service next month.

The new company, Rakuten Emobile Inc., will launch a mobile communications service called Rakuten Super WiFi that is compatible with Long Term Evolution, the high-speed mobile communications service eAccess provides in Japan, Rakuten said Wednesday.

Rakuten hopes the new service will help boost sales of its Kobo Touch book reader, which was released in July.
