Rakuten plans sale on solar panels

Kyodo

Rakuten Inc. on July 17 will start selling online four varieties of home-use solar panels at cut-rate prices made possible by bypassing wholesalers and delivering the panels directly to consumers.

Panels of 2.77 kilowatts to 4.44 kilowatts will be sold for ¥950,000 to ¥1.49 million including installation costs. The price of the 3-kilowatt panel is about 40 percent lower than average, according to the major online retailer.

Sales will begin first in Tokyo and Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures before going national by the end of the year, Rakuten said. The panels will be made in Japan.
