17 stalled public works projects axed

JIJI

Government agencies have scrapped or suspended 17 public works projects, a fiscal 2011 policy review report by the internal affairs ministry showed Friday.

The 17 projects, worth around ¥274.6 billion in total, were among 720 subject to the assessment because work has not started five years after they were approved or have not been completed 10 years after their launch. As a result, a total of ¥226.7 billion of state funds have remained unused, the report said.

The infrastructure ministry was supposed to oversee 10 of the 17 projects, worth a combined ¥253.3 billion, while six of them, totaling ¥21 billion, were to be carried out by the agriculture ministry. About ¥100 million had been allocated for the final project, under the Foreign Ministry.
