Hitachi Ltd. has signed a technical cooperation agreement with the Federal Grid Co. of Unified Energy System, which runs a power transmission business across Russia.

Hitachi said Thursday it will provide technological assistance to the Russian government-backed company to help create a system for remotely monitoring power facilities.

It will also help introduce a smart grid power transmission network to facilitate more efficient use of electricity in Russia, which needs to improve its power transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Through the tieup, Hitachi said, it hopes to cash in on future Russian demand stemming from replacing infrastructure with new facilities and equipment.
