Domestic shipments of smartphones in 2012 are expected to surge 55 percent to 31.13 million handsets, according to research firm IDC Japan.
The rise is attributable to strong sales of Apple Inc.’s iPhone 4S and other smartphone models, IDC Japan said Monday.
In 2011, domestic smartphone shipments soared about 3.6-fold to 20.10 million units and accounted for 53 percent of all cellphone shipments.
The research firm projects that domestic smartphone shipments will grow to 36.99 million in 2016.
Shipments of tablet computers are likely to rise about 48 percent to 3.33 million in 2012, and to 5.79 million units in 2016, IDC Japan said.
