Hiroshima mayor: no fourth term

HIROSHIMA (Kyodo) Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, a renowned proponent of global nuclear disarmament, said Tuesday he will not seek a fourth term in the April 10 election.

A former Lower House member from the Social Democratic Party, Akiba, 68, became mayor in February 1999 and is serving his third four-year term.

He had been thought willing to seek a fourth term as he has campaigned for bringing the 2020 Summer Olympic Games to the city under the slogan of “the Peace Olympics.”

Akiba was one of the recipients of the 2010 Ramon Magsaysay Award, considered the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize, for his role in the global campaign to abolish nuclear weapons.
