HIROSHIMA (Kyodo) The memoirs of the late Shinso Hamai, who served four terms as Hiroshima mayor after the 1945 atomic bombing of the city, have been published in English, titled “A-bomb Mayor.”
Hamai, who was born 1905, had his memoirs published in Japan in 1967, a year before he passed away. They were translated into English by Elizabeth Baldwin, 61, an American living in Hiroshima, and published by Hamai’s oldest son, Junso, 74, and others.
The memoirs detail Hamai’s efforts to rebuild the city and his work on policies to promote peace during his 20 years in office. Topics include the first Hiroshima peace festival in 1947, which later became the annual memorial service, and the construction of Peace Memorial Park.
