School daze: Classroom bar is a hit

Kyodo News

A bar featuring booths modeled after school classrooms is attracting nostalgic customers ranging from young adults to the elderly since opening its doors last spring in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo.

The bar, named Koshitsu Izakaya 6-Nen 4-Kumi Shibuya Dai-Ichi Bunko (Private-Booth Bar: Sixth Grade, Fourth Class in the Shibuya Branch School) boasts 13 booths that it calls “classrooms.”

“A school is a place where everybody has been. I guess they feel like going back there,” the bar’s spokesman said, adding that some customers show up wearing costumes resembling school uniforms.

A cocktail that customers mix from test tubes is a popular item, along with food typical for Japanese school lunches, such as fried bread.

The “classrooms” include science and music rooms as well as the principal’s office.
