Summer temperatures continued their ascent Wednesday morning with the mercury in Tokyo’s Otemachi business district reaching 36.2, exceeding 35 for the first time this year, the Meteorological Agency said.

By 9:30 a.m., five people in Tokyo had been taken to hospitals due to heat exhaustion, with one of them — an 89-year-old woman — falling unconscious, fire officials said.

As a high-pressure ridge in the Pacific spread over wide areas by noon, except for Hokkaido and Okinawa, the mercury topped 35 in various parts of eastern Japan, with Tatebayashi, Gunma Prefecture, logging 38.9 in the afternoon, the day’s highest in Japan.

Record highs were observed in four locations in Gunma, Tochigi and Shimane prefectures. The heat was particularly intense in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, at 38.5, the Saitama Prefecture town of Yorii at 38.2, the city of Koga, Ibaraki Prefecture, at 37.6 and Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, and Tokyo’s Nerima Ward at 37.6.
